У статті розглядаються особливості епітетної системи збірки Т Еліота ”Old Possum’s book of practical cats” з метою систематизації епітетів та з’ясування їхнього функціонального призначення. Було визначено, що з"поміж інших модифікацій епітета особливо вирізняється метафоричний епітет як засіб одночасної символізації та конкретизації
поняття. Епітети в поетичних творах Т. Еліота мають імпресіоністичне навантаження. Також епітети стають засобом колористичного та звукового урізноманітнення художнього світу Т. Еліота.
The article is devoted to the peculiarities of the epithetical system of the collection ”Old Possum’s book of practical cats” with the aim of systematization and ascertainment of the functional significance of epithets. It is defined, that the metaphorical epithet as a means of symbolization and concretization of a concept at the same time is the most important among other modifications. Epithets have impressionistic effect in poetic works of T. Eliot. Also epithets become a means of colourful and sound variety of the artistic world of T. Eliot.
